The Glowing Melon

The International Institute of Cosmetology (IIC), Connecticut’s exclusive Pivot Point–member school, with campuses in Wethersfield and Plainville has a lot to celebrate. Not only is it the only cosmetology school in Connecticut, from 2014 to present,  to have students who scored 100% on the state’s hairdressing/cosmetology licensing exam but its students have the highest average test score in the state at 90.12%.

A hairdressing family, the Gugliotti’s, founded IIC in 2002. Finding it harder and harder to hire the kind of stylists they wanted for their Hartford salon, Gugliotti’s Hair Fashion, they decided to start their own school. They assembled a top-notch staff and each took on lead roles in the administration of the school. They also selected a special curriculum, “A Designer’s Approach,” offered by Pivot Point International. The curriculum strives to “create the most skilled, savvy, salon-ready professionals.”  It does this by utilizing technology, hands-on experience, and educational structure to develop hair designers who are encouraged to do more than just master techniques. Student designers are taught to “see, think, create, and adapt all facets of their work,” creating the best possible results for their clients.

Two of the schools top students, who both passed their state cosmetology boards with a perfect score in the last year, agree that the school’s approach is a key to their success. They both note that the school took the extra time to help them to not only know answers, but to understand the reasons behind those answers. They also agree that the diverse faculty who reinforce techniques and the hands-on emphasis were invaluable in preparing them to step directly into their careers after graduation.

IIC’s director of education, Marie Bobair, states, “We are very proud of our 100% pass rate – it’s phenomenal – and reinforces in my mind how well we are preparing our students.”  Martin Gugliotti, IIC’s dean of students, agrees. “Our success is due in part to our exclusive partnership with Pivot Point, whose curriculum focuses on the why and not just the how of hairdressing. The other key is our team of very talented and knowledgeable educators.” Gugliotti adds, “At our schools we aspire to create true hair designers. Anyone can be taught to simply cut and blow dry hair. We want our students to learn to address their clients needs not only with skill, but with creativity and vision.”

The International Institute of Cosmetology will be evolving to a fully online education platform called LAB later this year.

Teena Gugliotti, Plainville educator accepting award.
There is a lot to be excited about here at the International Institute of Cosmetology! We've recently been named a top honoree in MODERN SALON Media’s national 2014 Excellence in Education competition now in its 5th year recognizing leadership and best practices among cosmetology schools around the country.

The Wethersfield school won top honors in the category of Next Level: Advanced Education & Alumni Programs. IIC was selected from hundreds of applicants from throughout the country and is the only Connecticut cosmetology school to be honored in the competition.

IIC’s Plainville campus also was honored for the quality of its Facility in the category of individual location with less than 75 students. MODERN SALON publisher, Steve Reiss, announced the recipients during the Annual Conference of the American Association of Cosmetology Schools last month in Phoenix, Arizona.

IIC received this amazing honor because of the high quality of its faculty as well as because of its commitment to bring guest educators from around the world to present their techniques and unique fashion trends. The school has hosted world-renown stylists such as Wayne Lloyd from Ireland, Tindaro Orifici and Pier Fillipo from Italy, Daniel Lozada from Puerto Rico, and Amanda Cassidy from Virginia.

Owner and Founder, Carmelo Gugliotti annoucing to the Wethersfield Campus about winning the award
Guest educators provide lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on workshops for students and alumni. “Through our international guest educators, we provide an experience that truly cannot be had anywhere else,” says Martin Gugliotti, IIC’s dean of students.

SPRING HAIR INSPIRATION

Spring has sprung and so has spring hair fashion. I absolutely love what is in style right now! Romantic floral headbands, loosely kept braids, tousled bed head! It's a lazy girls dream come true...or is it? Now you may think that having a messy bedhead look is easy but thats not always the case. To make it look as if you didn't literally roll out of bed and go to school or work, you will still need to put some effort into it. Here are a couple quick tips...

1. Add texture at the root by spraying hairspray or working mousse at the roots. The hair should be a little dirty to increase hold.
2.Curl 1-inch sections- pin curl loosely so it has time to set.
3.Remove pins and add hairspray
4. Flip your head and run your fingers through once it has dried.

Wanna go without heat?...

1. Wash hair well and condition even better
2. Towel dry hair very well
3.Add a curl enhancing texturing spray
4. Wrap hair in a tight bun
5. Now go to sleep
6. In the morning unwrap, flip hair upside down. Spray hairspray and take a texturizing pomade like Sebastians Micro-Web and lightly apply to get a separated look

To let this look, make sure to do the instructions above but add a few more smaller buns at night and in the morning add heat with a blow dryer while your hair is upside down. Tease the underneath of your hair and spray with hairspray. Add a clip in the front and voila!

How to Cure Winter Dry Hair

Every year my clients ask me; "how do I keep my hair from being so dry and unmanageable in the winter?" Whether it is the dry air outside or the even dryer radiator heat inside, winter is tough on all hair types.
Now, the best place to recharge your winter ravaged hair is your nearest salon (Gugliotti Salon and Spa) where your stylist can not only give you a relaxing conditioning treatment and the trim you will need to keep your hair healthy, but also send you home with the latest moisturizing products like Sebastian Drench or Le'Marca Soy Protein Conditioner (sold exclusively at Gugliotti's Salon and Spa and the IIC schools) to help you rebuild your brittle locks and soothe your dry scalp.

What if those salon treatments and products are out of your budget? Don't fret! I have compiled a list of my favorite home remedies and the ingredients can be found in your pantry or fridge!

Ingredient list:
  • olive oil
  • lemon juice
  • apple cider vinegar
  • avocado
  • plain yogurt or sour cream
  • banana
  • honey
  • eggs
  • mayo (if you're out of eggs
  • coconut oil
  • coconut milk
  • beer
  • jojoba oil or sunflower oil
  • baking soda
  • shea butter
  • essential oil of your choosing
  • shower cap to use your body heat to help penetrate

First you will need to rid scalp of unwanted flakes. These first 2 recipes treat both the scalp and help to balance the Ph level of the hair.

Lemon & Olive Oil Treatment

  • Take 2 Tbs of lemon juice, 2 Tbs olive oil and 2 Tbs of water. Mix and massage into scalp and hair. Leave on for at least 20 mins and rinse with cool to lukewarm water

Lemon juice has  mild acidity and closes down the cuticle to give hair shine and balance. It also helps to rid the scalp of any loose, dry flakes on skin.

Baking Soda and Apple Cider Vinegar Treatment
  • Make a paste of baking soda and water. Scrub it into the scalp and then work down to ends. Let it sit for 10-15 mins and then hop in the shower and  rinse with apple cider vinegar. You'll feel it bubbling at first just like when you made a volcano for the 5th grade science fair then scrub it all together, leave on for 5 more mins and then rinse well! Follow up with one of the conditioners below or use the conditioner you already have. Your hair will be oh so soft and shiny!

Using a combination of baking soda and apple cider vinegar helps to reduce residue from product build up. It is great for your scalp and it acts as an exfoliant. The vinegar brings the natural PH back to normal levels and closes the cuticle to protect from hair color fade and prevent dullness. Get  ready for residue free shine!

For fine or limp hair:
  • USE BEER! Open up a can and let it sit out for a little bit so it is flat. Mix 1/2 bottle or can of flat beer with 1 tsp of light oil (I like jojoba oil but you can use sunflower oil too) and a raw egg (if you have oily hair only use the egg white). Mix well and apply to clean damp hair and let it sit for 20 mins with a cap on. Rinse well with cool water.

The ingredient in beer that works its magic on hair, is yeast! It works to plump up tired hair and the protein residue from the grains help to strengthen hair.

For Oily Hair:
  • Whisk one egg white and then add in 1 cup of water and 1 Tbs of coconut oil. Add to clean damp hair and leave on for 20 mins with a cap on. Rinse with cool water.

Coconut oil is one of the few oils that can make your hair super soft and shiny without weighing hair down. Oil cleanses oil, so one that suffers from the daily oil slick may scoff at this treatment, but it's true! Even oily hair needs a treatment to bring hair to it's best. It smells great too!

Dull Hair:

  • Put a half a cup of sour cream or plain yogurt to damp hair and let sit for 30 mins with a cap on. Rinse with cool to warm water. Do every other week. For extra conditioning: add an egg and leave on for 30 minutes. make sure to rinse with cool water as to not "cook" the egg.

Styling products can leave a film especially if they are not salon quality and can both zap moisture and dulls shine.Lactic acid gently strips away dirt while the fat from the milk moisturizes.

Dry Hair
  • Mix 1/2 cup of honey and 2 tbls of olive oil or jojoba oil and apply to clean damp hair and let it sit for 20-30mins with a cap on. Rinse well with warm water.

Whether it's flat ironing, hard water or the winters dry air, honey is a natural humectant which means it attracts and locks in moisture. Honey is also a natural antibacterial agent so it helps fight bacterial growth on the scalp. Great to put on a pimple too, minus the oil : )

Frizzy Hair

  • Mix 2 Tbls of honey and one avocado whisked together until smooth. Apply to clean damp hair and leave on for 30mins with a cap on to capture your body heat. Rinse well with warm water. Do this once a month and say bye bye frizz!

If your hair is sun damaged or chemically damaged, using this combo will help replenish the keratin bonds that have been weakened. Avocados are rich in a variety of vitamins and nutrients, including vitamin E and protein, both of which your hair need. Avocado also closely resembles our own skins oils better than any other product in the beauty isle. As you read above honey is just amazing for your hair and skin!

For All Hair Types and Scalp Care

  • Blend 1 ripe banana and 1 ripe avocado so there are no chunks (this will help when rinsing) Apply to clean, damp hair. Leave on for 30 mins with a cap and rinse very well. It will feel strange as it's drying but once it is 100% dry and brushed out you will see and feel the difference!

Banana is rich in potassium, natural oils, carbohydrates and vitamins which help in softening the hair, adding moisture and protects the hair’s natural elasticity by preventing split ends and breakage. Bananas create lustrous shine, added manageability, help with hair growth, can prevent hair loss, controls dandruff and itchy scalp. Amazing benefits with this fruit! Also great for the skin among other things!

For Deep Conditioning
  • Whip up 1 ripe avocado, 1 cup of coconut milk, 2 Tbs of coconut oil, 2 Tbs honey until smooth. Apply to clean damp hair and leave on with cap for at least 30 mins and feel free to leave it in over night just make sure to put a towel down over your pillow!
  • Heat 1 1/3 cups of shea butter until it is a liquid. Add a 1/2 cup of olive oil. Allow to cool not more than 30mins then add 1 tsp of vitamin E oil (I get mine at Trader Joes) and an essential oil of your choice and whip until a light mousse forms. Apply to clean damp hair and leave on for 30 mins with a cap. Rinse well with warm water.

Also remember ladies and gents to keep your heating utensils to a minimum during these dry times! Try to let hair dry naturally every once and awhile. Make sure to  practice different updo's that will help you to curb the use of your hair dryer and flat iron.

If you are going to use your hairdryer and flat iron make sure to protect the hair with  an styling oil. Le'Marca's Shine On is a perfect complement to your heating utensil! I also like using Argan oil as a everyday styling product especially when straightening or curling hair.
Also don't forget!!! To have healthy long hair you need regular trims to keep it growing instead of splitting! See your stylist or come into the International Institute of Cosmetology schools and get the needed trims every 8 weeks to keep your hair in tip top shape!

With all those holiday cocktail parties, whether it be your office, friends or family gatherings; don't let it make you go broke! Find that awesome little black dress and accessorize! Wanna know a free accessory? ....HAIR!

Here are the Top Ten Holiday looks of 2013 that you can do in a flash and  look great for your
 New Year!

I love this quick twist knot with a simple sparkle added for an more dressy affair.

I love this for a more casual, after work cocktail party. Two braids collide with a simple twist to look like a flower in your hair with the middle braid cascading down to add a nice touch.

For a more glamorous evening, be sure to pull out your hot rollers! That is the best  way to get this look of vintage glamour. You could even add a little clip near the ear to add a lil' sparkle to your do!

Do you have short hair? Don't fret! Just get a headband and tousle those tiny locks for this simple yet romantic look.

I love this play on texture! Smooth, split part pony tail but crazy and textured in the back. I might have to try this...

Master this look and your day 3 hair will always look fab! This is a great style that can go for day or evening looks. The side chignon is always a crowd pleaser and can go with many different styles.

This style is great for a more dramatic tousled curl look. Similar to the pony tail above with it's play on a smooth top and textured bottom.

This low structured bun with a big messy pompadour is a great look with a funky dress or for someone that needs a little excitement added to their style!  Classic but fun!

This is not as hard as it looks! Braid two braids from the back of ear and criss-cross them to the top and pin them in. Then twist yourself a messy bun in the back and wallah!

Pump up the volume! Tease up your bouffant and add a bun for that classic and striking look. I love that its not completely smoothed out.

Here are three examples of more smoothed out buns that can be suited to fit your party needs. Easiest style with the classic look that still turns heads!

Hope you all have a great time at all your Holiday Parties! Be safe and always be stylish!

With Love ,
 IIC

2013 I.I.C. Graduation Ceremony & Hair Show

When you think of graduations, do you think of boring speeches, waiting forever to hear you name called, those ugly robes and unfashionable hats?? Well not at our school! Every year the Gugliotti Family throws a huge celebration of their students accomplishments and this year tops them all! There were 4 fashion shows that included our students work, our instructors works and our 3 guest artists that came to celebrate.

Here are some highlights of this years student fashion show to start it off...

Impressive huh? These students are reaching far beyond what most students just out of Cosmetology school can do. It's really mind blowing!

I love that they had a bridal aspect of the show too. It's great that they are not typical bridal up do's, the different looks were intricate and fun. Here's a few...

Some of our former students and instructors also got to showcase their work. Some of these students have also won OMC's stylist of the year awards...

Here is our 2013 Graduating Class!!!

YAY!!!!!

We had some wonderful inspiring speeches that were given by Carmelo Gugliotti who is the Director of the School, 2 Students from each campus that told of their experience at I.I.C and also 2 guests speakers that have pretty impressive resumes that gave words of wisdom and advice to our recent graduates.

Carmelo Gugliotti- Director at I.I.C.

Nicole O'Hare- Wethersfield Graduate 2013

Elizabeth Uccello 2013- Raising the roof for the Plainville campus!

Andrea Turrisi- Gave the blessing of the food. He is a long time family friend that is the current trainer for the Gents Team that will be competing in Germany 2014. He is also a past World OMC Champion.

David Tomassetti- Wella Educator gives  great advice to graduates

So another cool thing about our school is that we invite international guests to come and teach current students and our alumni  as well. Here is Daniel Lozada. He's a very talented stylist that has 13 years experience. He is well-known from runway competitions, photo shoots for local as well as international publications, music videos and countless more industry projects. He was most recently on the July 2013 cover of American Salon and worked with the 4th season Project runway Winner

Here is some of his work...

Then there was also 2 other very talented guest artists that are from the states. Amanda Cassidy is from Virginia and has been a salon owner, educator, and hairstylist for over 30 years. She has been a 7 time USA team member representing the United States in the world championships of hairdressing in LasVegas, Russia,Chicago,Paris and Milan. She has also been a 3 time European Championship medalist, as well as a 3 time world championship medalist. Amanda also sits as a judge for USA national hair styling competitions.

Here is some of her amazing braid work!

Rick Quessenberry is from Springfield MO and has been a salon owner since the age of 19. He also began competing at that age because of mentors Gary and Deanna McCord who owned the cosmetology school he attended. Since then he has won over 400 awards in state, national and international competition. Since retiring from competition, he has become a certified OMC juror and won the platinum award given to jurors for their fair and accurate judging skills. He's been on 6 world hairdressing teams and trained the 2002 team. He won the World Supreme trophy twice and the America's cup twice just to name a few. He's had a love affair with hair for 41 years and still loves going to work every day.

Here is some of his run way looks...
