How to Cure Winter Dry Hair
Every year my clients ask me; "how do I keep my hair from being so dry and unmanageable in the winter?" Whether it is the dry air outside or the even dryer radiator heat inside, winter is tough on all hair types.
Now, the best place to recharge your winter ravaged hair is your nearest salon (Gugliotti Salon and Spa) where your stylist can not only give you a relaxing conditioning treatment and the trim you will need to keep your hair healthy, but also send you home with the latest moisturizing products like Sebastian Drench or Le'Marca Soy Protein Conditioner (sold exclusively at Gugliotti's Salon and Spa and the IIC schools) to help you rebuild your brittle locks and soothe your dry scalp.
What if those salon treatments and products are out of your budget? Don't fret! I have compiled a list of my favorite home remedies and the ingredients can be found in your pantry or fridge!
Ingredient list:
- olive oil
- lemon juice
- apple cider vinegar
- avocado
- plain yogurt or sour cream
- banana
- honey
- eggs
- mayo (if you're out of eggs
- coconut oil
- coconut milk
- beer
- jojoba oil or sunflower oil
- baking soda
- shea butter
- essential oil of your choosing
- shower cap to use your body heat to help penetrate
First you will need to rid scalp of unwanted flakes. These first 2 recipes treat both the scalp and help to balance the Ph level of the hair.
Lemon & Olive Oil Treatment
- Take 2 Tbs of lemon juice, 2 Tbs olive oil and 2 Tbs of water. Mix and massage into scalp and hair. Leave on for at least 20 mins and rinse with cool to lukewarm water
Lemon juice has mild acidity and closes down the cuticle to give hair shine and balance. It also helps to rid the scalp of any loose, dry flakes on skin.
Baking Soda and Apple Cider Vinegar Treatment
- Make a paste of baking soda and water. Scrub it into the scalp and then work down to ends. Let it sit for 10-15 mins and then hop in the shower and rinse with apple cider vinegar. You'll feel it bubbling at first just like when you made a volcano for the 5th grade science fair then scrub it all together, leave on for 5 more mins and then rinse well! Follow up with one of the conditioners below or use the conditioner you already have. Your hair will be oh so soft and shiny!
Using a combination of baking soda and apple cider vinegar helps to reduce residue from product build up. It is great for your scalp and it acts as an exfoliant. The vinegar brings the natural PH back to normal levels and closes the cuticle to protect from hair color fade and prevent dullness. Get ready for residue free shine!
For fine or limp hair:
- USE BEER! Open up a can and let it sit out for a little bit so it is flat. Mix 1/2 bottle or can of flat beer with 1 tsp of light oil (I like jojoba oil but you can use sunflower oil too) and a raw egg (if you have oily hair only use the egg white). Mix well and apply to clean damp hair and let it sit for 20 mins with a cap on. Rinse well with cool water.
The ingredient in beer that works its magic on hair, is yeast! It works to plump up tired hair and the protein residue from the grains help to strengthen hair.
For Oily Hair:
- Whisk one egg white and then add in 1 cup of water and 1 Tbs of coconut oil. Add to clean damp hair and leave on for 20 mins with a cap on. Rinse with cool water.
Coconut oil is one of the few oils that can make your hair super soft and shiny without weighing hair down. Oil cleanses oil, so one that suffers from the daily oil slick may scoff at this treatment, but it's true! Even oily hair needs a treatment to bring hair to it's best. It smells great too!
Dull Hair:
- Put a half a cup of sour cream or plain yogurt to damp hair and let sit for 30 mins with a cap on. Rinse with cool to warm water. Do every other week. For extra conditioning: add an egg and leave on for 30 minutes. make sure to rinse with cool water as to not "cook" the egg.

Styling products can leave a film especially if they are not salon quality and can both zap moisture and dulls shine.Lactic acid gently strips away dirt while the fat from the milk moisturizes.
Dry Hair
- Mix 1/2 cup of honey and 2 tbls of olive oil or jojoba oil and apply to clean damp hair and let it sit for 20-30mins with a cap on. Rinse well with warm water.
Whether it's flat ironing, hard water or the winters dry air, honey is a natural humectant which means it attracts and locks in moisture. Honey is also a natural antibacterial agent so it helps fight bacterial growth on the scalp. Great to put on a pimple too, minus the oil : )
Frizzy Hair
- Mix 2 Tbls of honey and one avocado whisked together until smooth. Apply to clean damp hair and leave on for 30mins with a cap on to capture your body heat. Rinse well with warm water. Do this once a month and say bye bye frizz!
If your hair is sun damaged or chemically damaged, using this combo will help replenish the keratin bonds that have been weakened. Avocados are rich in a variety of vitamins and nutrients, including vitamin E and protein, both of which your hair need. Avocado also closely resembles our own skins oils better than any other product in the beauty isle. As you read above honey is just amazing for your hair and skin!
For All Hair Types and Scalp Care
- Blend 1 ripe banana and 1 ripe avocado so there are no chunks (this will help when rinsing) Apply to clean, damp hair. Leave on for 30 mins with a cap and rinse very well. It will feel strange as it's drying but once it is 100% dry and brushed out you will see and feel the difference!
Banana is rich in potassium, natural oils, carbohydrates and vitamins which help in softening the hair, adding moisture and protects the hair’s natural elasticity by preventing split ends and breakage. Bananas create lustrous shine, added manageability, help with hair growth, can prevent hair loss, controls dandruff and itchy scalp. Amazing benefits with this fruit! Also great for the skin among other things!
For Deep Conditioning
- Whip up 1 ripe avocado, 1 cup of coconut milk, 2 Tbs of coconut oil, 2 Tbs honey until smooth. Apply to clean damp hair and leave on with cap for at least 30 mins and feel free to leave it in over night just make sure to put a towel down over your pillow!
- Heat 1 1/3 cups of shea butter until it is a liquid. Add a 1/2 cup of olive oil. Allow to cool not more than 30mins then add 1 tsp of vitamin E oil (I get mine at Trader Joes) and an essential oil of your choice and whip until a light mousse forms. Apply to clean damp hair and leave on for 30 mins with a cap. Rinse well with warm water.
Also remember ladies and gents to keep your heating utensils to a minimum during these dry times! Try to let hair dry naturally every once and awhile. Make sure to practice different updo's that will help you to curb the use of your hair dryer and flat iron.

If you are going to use your hairdryer and flat iron make sure to protect the hair with an styling oil. Le'Marca's Shine On is a perfect complement to your heating utensil! I also like using Argan oil as a everyday styling product especially when straightening or curling hair.
Also don't forget!!! To have healthy long hair you need regular trims to keep it growing instead of splitting! See your stylist or come into the International Institute of Cosmetology schools and get the needed trims every 8 weeks to keep your hair in tip top shape!
