The Glowing Melon

International Institute of Cosmetology's state-of-the-art cosmetology program consists of 1500 hours which include both practical and theory aspects. During the approximate year-long program, Future Stylists spend time developing their technical and professional skills, working hands on, and facilitating the student salon in four phases.

Have you ever wondered what students do each day in IIC's cosmetology program? Here is what each of our four phases of Future Stylists are working on today at IIC Plainville's campus:

Phase one students are mastering solid diagonal back hair cutting techniques on their mannequins, with the ends of the hair ultimately forming a V-shape. The learning focus for IIC's newest class is finger-sheer position, comb control, sectioning, distribution, and technique.
Phase two students are learning about the theory and application of color by designing color wheels on poster board. After they finish, they will apply this learning when formulating colors and neutralizing tones.
Phase three students began their morning by setting up their stations in the student salon with their tool kit and products to prepare for client appointments and walk-ins. Services performed in the morning included a men's haircut and a color correction on mid-back length warm blond hair.
Phase four students gathered for a brief theory class in the morning to discuss real-life scenarios involving color formulation. They spent the rest of the day applying this discussion in team exercises, focusing on scenarios which involved pre-lightening hair and formulating a color to get the desired results. A phase four student who is close to completion also spent time refining her resume and cover letter.

With the way that technology is slowly engulfing every aspect of our lives --and I mean this in a positive way-- it would only be natural to assume that someday the fashion and makeup world will also undergo a massive overhaul. You might ask, how fashion and makeup could do that? How can a service such as this really be online?

Years ago we wondered how fashion could be purchased online, or how we could walk into a store and try on a dress without taking off a single item of clothing. But now it is all reality, maybe not in every store, but in some stores you can look in the mirror and see yourself in a dress you have not physically put on. So how does this relate to the hair and makeup industries? Currently there are apps available that allow you to see what they would look like with different hairstyles and makeup, but unless a robot pops out of the screen, there is no way they can physically get a service from an app… or can they?

Anyone can order a makeup artist or hairdresser at a moment’s notice through this app. How does it work? Well, an order is placed, and then a hair stylist or makeup artist will show up at your hotel, place of work, office or home to prep you for that important business meeting, that big first date or that special girl’s night out.

At the moment, GlamorSquad (what a great name!) is only available in New York, Miami, Los Angeles and The Hamptons. However, I foresee that similar services-apps like this one will start popping up all over the world.

It seems to be the hair and beauty version of Air BnB or Uber. These business models are great, as they allow professionals to take their careers into their own hands while bringing great services to everyday people for a fraction of the cost. The larger companies do not like it… but guess what? The consumers do! The big companies didn’t like Groupon when it first started, but look how mainstream it has now become. Great news for future hairstylists, makeup artists and beauticians, your future is looking bright!

As far as creativity goes, there are no rules. These were the artistic guidelines set forth by Pivot Point International for the 2015 Funk Up Your Head Student Mannequin Design Contest. Funk Up Your Head is a global creative hair design competition for Pivot Point apprentices and students to display and share their creativity across the globe.

Students were able to submit their entries by posting photos of their mannequin through the competition website. Funk Up Your Head is a two part regional and international competition. Each Country’s first prize winner will move on to the international round. Each participating country will have a panel of judges who will select 3 winners.

The International Institute of Cosmetology with campuses in Plainville, CT and Wethersfield, CT had 3 students submit entries and all 3 placed in the regional round and one of three students won 1st place and will move forward to the International round. Natasha Galarza won 1st place for her Green Ivy design and will move on to the international round, Alexis Forstell tied in 7th place for her submission when love lies and Samantha Fabretti placed as a Fan Favorite for her peacock entry.

"It was a new and exciting experience to participate in the pivot point competition and I am honored to have been awarded with the Fan Favorite prize. Being recognized by your peers is a great feeling", said Samantha Fabretti of New Britain. Samantha is a recent graduate of the International Institute of Cosmetology’s Wethersfield Campus.

The school’s international focus and Pivot Point teaching methodologies train hairstylists and aestheticians in the latest trends and techniques while motivating them to persevere in this great industry. Congratulations to Natasha Galarza on placing first in Pivot Point International's mannequin design contest, Funk Up Your Head. Natasha describes her mannequin design, named Green Ivy, below:

"A futuristic piece inspired by various shades of emerald and vibrant greens. Basing my piece off of a detailed decal, I transposed my design to resemble such creativity and uniqueness of nature. Throughout the process of creating this piece I wanted to showcase detail in the smallest places that made the piece become whole. My placement of intricate elements within my design were put in place to attract the eye from afar."

International Institute of Cosmetology is Connecticut's only Pivot Point member school. I.I.C.'s students are provided with the essential tools for the beauty industry through Pivot Point's learning system, which is part of the largest network of school in North America.

The International Institute of Cosmetology (IIC), Connecticut’s exclusive Pivot Point–member school, with campuses in Wethersfield and Plainville has a lot to celebrate. Not only is it the only cosmetology school in Connecticut, from 2014 to present,  to have students who scored 100% on the state’s hairdressing/cosmetology licensing exam but its students have the highest average test score in the state at 90.12%.

A hairdressing family, the Gugliotti’s, founded IIC in 2002. Finding it harder and harder to hire the kind of stylists they wanted for their Hartford salon, Gugliotti’s Hair Fashion, they decided to start their own school. They assembled a top-notch staff and each took on lead roles in the administration of the school. They also selected a special curriculum, “A Designer’s Approach,” offered by Pivot Point International. The curriculum strives to “create the most skilled, savvy, salon-ready professionals.”  It does this by utilizing technology, hands-on experience, and educational structure to develop hair designers who are encouraged to do more than just master techniques. Student designers are taught to “see, think, create, and adapt all facets of their work,” creating the best possible results for their clients.

Two of the schools top students, who both passed their state cosmetology boards with a perfect score in the last year, agree that the school’s approach is a key to their success. They both note that the school took the extra time to help them to not only know answers, but to understand the reasons behind those answers. They also agree that the diverse faculty who reinforce techniques and the hands-on emphasis were invaluable in preparing them to step directly into their careers after graduation.

IIC’s director of education, Marie Bobair, states, “We are very proud of our 100% pass rate – it’s phenomenal – and reinforces in my mind how well we are preparing our students.”  Martin Gugliotti, IIC’s dean of students, agrees. “Our success is due in part to our exclusive partnership with Pivot Point, whose curriculum focuses on the why and not just the how of hairdressing. The other key is our team of very talented and knowledgeable educators.” Gugliotti adds, “At our schools we aspire to create true hair designers. Anyone can be taught to simply cut and blow dry hair. We want our students to learn to address their clients needs not only with skill, but with creativity and vision.”

The International Institute of Cosmetology will be evolving to a fully online education platform called LAB later this year.
