The Glowing Melon

2012 Holiday Trends

Presented by Harpers Bazaar Magazine

Bejeweled Bun + Sleek Black Liner

A sleek bun can easily blend into the background but a sharp center part—along with a sparkly headband—draws the eye, like Karolina Kurkova. The trick is to apply a generous amount of hair gel to hold the middle part in place and position the headband a few inches back from your ears for an elegant feel. Doing a tight line of black around the eyes accentuates the linear aspect of your center part as well. Celebrity makeup artist Fiona Stiles suggests working with a pointy-tip black felt liner and holding your lid taunt to master the look.

 Brushed-Out Waves + Pale Lips
Alexa Chung is the poster girl for downtown chic these days, so no wonder her party look is decidedly laidback-but-cool. To get her semi-waves, curl only the lower section of hair below your cheekbones so the effect looks lived-in (not accidentally half-done) and hold the iron vertically so the waves fall back, away from the face. A dab of peach cream blush on the lips is pretty in an understated, dashed-off kind of way, especially when offset by smoky eyes, points out Stiles.

Shiny Waves + Crimson Lips

Ashley Greene's classic combo works in your '20s or '60s and never looks tired as long as you keep your hair in beautiful condition (no frizz, no splits) and stroke on a rouge that doesn’t feather or fade. Stiles likes to work with a glossy red pencil.

Flapper Faux Bob + Kitten Eye

Retro hairstyles run the risk of looking costume-y but the deep side-part and undone wisps keep this style fresh and modern on Coco Rocha, says celebrity hairstylist and salon owner Oribe. After blowing out hair and curling it with an iron, roll the back section into a faux bob and secure with a long pin. The eyes offer a subtle wink to the twenties with a “kitten” effect, which is like a cat eye but done with a shorter flick of liner at the outer corners, says Stiles.

Chic Top Knot + Cherry Red Lips

The beauty of this hairstyle is that it can be made more or less dressy depending on how tight you pull the knot, points out Oribe. Elizabeth Olsen opted to keep it casual, so it plays well against bold cherry red lips, says Stiles who recommends applying a bright shade of Chanel Rouge Allure with a small makeup brush to capture this precise, painterly finish.

Finger Waves + Copper Smoky Eyes

Evan Rachel Wood's finger waves are just as striking now as they were back in Gatsby’s days. Work gel through damp hair before sculpting into finger waves, pinning to the head, and heating with a diffuser to set in place, says celebrity hairstylist Garren. Then play up that ritzy-glitzy mood with metallic smoky eyes, says Stiles. Work with two shades of copper shadow, applying the lighter hue in the inner corners to make your eyes twinkle and using the darker shade at the edges for dramatic definition, recommends Stiles.

 Fishtail Braid + Rich Eyes

Braids aren’t just for summer afternoons, as Felicity Jones proves so elegantly. While the fishtail style requires some practice, a traditional plait also works for a holiday party. Just apply dry shampoo beforehand to create grip and texture, then pull apart the finished braid to make it appear bigger and thicker, says Oribe. An imperfect smoky eye also keeps the look from being too pristine. Stiles suggests smudging a deep brown or gray shadow along the top and bottom lash lines and edging eyes with a drag of dark liner in the outer corners for a touch of undone glamour.

 Braided Bun + Radiant Skin

Adding a swath of braids is the easiest and most of-the-moment way to elevate a simple bun, as Freida Pinto did. French braid a section starting from above the left ear and finish below the right, securing with an elastic, and then sweep it up with the rest of your hair into a low bun. The ladylike style definitely calls for radiant skin and pale lips, says Stiles. Try mixing a drop of luminizer into your foundation and “painting” it on with a flat makeup brush for a flawless effect

 Mega Volume + Major Eyes

Joan Smalls' look is a little disco and diva chic. To get hair as high as Smalls', tease it from front to back then smooth it every so slightly with your hands before wrapping it into a French twist. “Keep the sides tight and smooth, but pull the top forward and up to exaggerate the volume,” says Garren. Then smoke out your eyes with layers and layers of dark shadow and mascara — when you think you’ve added enough, do one more layer.

Soft Waves + Nude Lip
Kirsten Dunst plays up her movie-star good looks with classic Hollywood waves, which are easy to achieve with hot rollers and a paddle brush — run the brush through curls after they’ve set to form smooth, flowing curves and mist with hairspray. Instead of the expected red lip, go for a beige shade two tones darker than your skintone (the secret to looking youthful, not washed-out) and load up on mascara to finish.

Poufy Bun + Peach Lips
Olivia Wilde's combination of a loose bun and sleek headband creates a sexy “pouf” that’s so chic right now, says Garren. Apply a mousse or root booster to get volume and tease the hair around the crown before pulling it back into a bun with some height on top. Finish with a simple peach lip — a shade like Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Canotier casts a soft glow on all skin tones, says Stiles.

Sleek Bun + Scarlet Lip
Uma Thurman's shiny ballerina bun is elegant in a timeless way. To give hair this kind of cornsilk sheen, apply a shine-enhancing serum like Redken Shine Brilliance Glass 01 Smoothing Serum before parting hair on the side and slicking it into a geometric round bun high atop the head. As for those glamorous red lips, Stiles suggests Tom Ford Beauty in Cherry Lush — the perfect red that works for any skin tone.
